Celebrate America by Voting!

Happy Birthday America – and Happy New Chamber Year!
By Lisa Krueger, IOM, ACE

Happy Birthday America! As Americans, we are so fortunate to have the right to place our own leaders in office. If you haven’t noticed by the multitude of campaign signs and other indicators all over the county, it is an election year.

There is nothing more American nor more important than voting. I clearly remember voting for the first time back in 1980 – it was a proud moment for me. I don’t think I’ve missed an election – primary, general or special – since. I have always felt that it’s my responsibility as a citizen of our great nation to vote. I hope you feel the same way. Unfortunately, less than 55 percent of Arizona voters actually vote putting Arizona at 45th in the nation for voter turnout, according to the O’Connor House, www.VoteAZ.net.  That’s just sad and lazy. I would guess that the percentage who don’t though, complain the loudest when things don’t go their way.

Your votes do make a difference especially in local elections and with local initiatives. It’s easy to register and the deadline to vote in Arizona’s primary on Aug. 26 is midnight, Monday, July 28. Business and organization owners – help your employees and teams get registered as well  - and parents of young adults of voting age – you can help by educating and encouraging your kids to take ownership of their future.

On another note, it’s the Chamber’s New Year. We are excited about FY 2014-2015 and are busy planning for the coming 12 months along with working on some long range goals for the coming 3-5 years. The Chamber board and staff are hoping to implement some new business and member programs in the near future but we do need your support. If you’re not a member now is the time to join – as one of the top 2 chambers in the United States (American Chamber of Commerce Executives annual Chamber of the Year competition), we know we’re on the right track. We can help you grow your business while we all work together in strengthening Lake Havasu City.
